The real difference: monthly budget vs paycheck budget
EveryDollar asks you to plan a month: income at the top, every dollar given a line until you hit zero. That works well when you're paid monthly, or when you're happy to work out on your own which paycheck covers which bill.
Most people aren't paid monthly, though. Paid every two weeks, rent might come out of the first check and the car payment out of the second. A month-level budget can show you're fine overall while the week before your next payday is already short. MyGood starts from that problem. Each bill is assigned to the paycheck that pays it, and whatever is left over becomes a per-day number you can spend until the next check lands.
Where EveryDollar is the better pick
- You follow Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps. EveryDollar is built around them, and Premium includes coaching and a financial roadmap.
- You're paid once a month. A month-based zero-based budget lines up neatly with a monthly paycheck.
- You want reports and CSV export. Those are in EveryDollar Premium.
Where MyGood is the better pick
- You're paid weekly or every two weeks. Budgeting by paycheck is the core of MyGood, and it's free. In EveryDollar, payday-based planning is a Premium feature.
- You want one number, not a spreadsheet. MyGood's safe-to-spend tells you what you can spend today. You don't have to read a month of lines to work it out.
- You want a debt payoff plan in the free version. MyGood's free plan includes a debt snowball that shows your payoff order and date.
- You don't want to link a bank. Both free plans work without a bank connection. MyGood's whole design assumes you might never link one.
