How Much Can I Spend Until Payday?

By The MyGood Team August 8, 2026 5 min read

It's the question almost everyone asks themselves mid-week, standing in a checkout line or eyeing a night out: how much can I actually spend right now without coming up short before payday? Your bank balance won't tell you — it doesn't know which bills are still coming. Here's the simple way to work it out, and how to get the number without doing the math every time.

The short version: take the money you have for this pay period, subtract the bills still due and anything you're setting aside, then divide by the number of days until your next paycheck. That's your safe-to-spend per day. MyGood calculates it for you, free.

The formula

Four steps. You can do it on paper right now:

  1. Start with what you have for this pay period. That's the money in your checking account that has to last until your next paycheck (plus that paycheck, if you're counting the whole period).
  2. Subtract the bills and obligations still due before payday. Rent, utilities, subscriptions, the credit-card payment, gas — anything that has to be paid.
  3. Subtract anything you're setting aside. Savings, a sinking fund for the car registration, money you simply don't want to touch.
  4. Divide what's left by the days until your next paycheck. That's how much you can safely spend per day.

A worked example

StepAmount
Money for this pay period$1,400
− Bills still due (rent share, phone, gas)− $780
− Setting aside (savings)− $150
Left to spend$470
÷ Days until payday÷ 10
Safe-to-spend per day$47 / day

Now the question "can I afford this?" has a real answer instead of a guess.

Why this is hard to keep in your head

The formula is simple; doing it accurately, every day, is not:

  • Bills land on different days. One's due tomorrow, one after your next paycheck — so "what's still coming" changes constantly.
  • The number moves every time you spend. Buy lunch and your safe-to-spend for the rest of the period shifts. Redoing the math by hand each time is a non-starter.
  • It's easy to double-count or forget. You remember rent but forget the annual subscription that hits Thursday, and suddenly you're short.
  • Your bank balance lies to you. A "healthy" balance today can be mostly spoken-for by bills you haven't paid yet.

Let MyGood do the math (free)

This is exactly what MyGood is for. You enter your paychecks and bills once, and it keeps the calculation running for you:

  • Your safe-to-spend, today. The number from the formula above, computed automatically and updated as you spend.
  • Paycheck-based. It works between paychecks — the real window you're budgeting — and counts down the days to payday for you.
  • Bills handled. Known obligations are already subtracted, so what's shown is genuinely safe to spend.
  • 60-second setup, free, no bank login required.

Three ways to make the number more accurate

  • List every recurring bill, even the small ones. The forgotten $12 subscriptions are what sink the plan.
  • Set money aside first, not last. Treat savings like a bill so it's out of your spendable number from day one.
  • Log spending as you go. The safe-to-spend number is only as honest as what you've told it you've spent.

Stop guessing what you can spend.

MyGood does this math for you and shows your safe-to-spend for today. Free, 60 seconds, no bank login required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much I can spend until payday?

Take the money you have for this pay period, subtract the bills still due and anything you're setting aside, then divide what's left by the number of days until your next paycheck. The result is how much you can safely spend per day.

What does "safe to spend" mean?

Safe-to-spend is the amount you can spend without coming up short on bills or savings before your next paycheck. It's your money left over after obligations, spread across the days until payday.

How much of my paycheck should I keep for spending?

There's no single percentage — it depends on your bills and savings goals. The reliable way is to subtract your obligations and savings first; whatever remains, divided by the days until payday, is what's genuinely safe to spend.

Is there an app that tells me how much I can spend?

Yes. MyGood calculates your safe-to-spend per day automatically from your paychecks and bills, and updates it as you spend. It's free and doesn't require connecting your bank.

Is it free?

Yes. Core paycheck budgeting and your daily safe-to-spend are free to use, with no credit card required to start.
